As Adults Age, Aerobic Capacity Declines
(Ivanhoe Newswire) -- As we age, exercise is the key to functioning independently.
This is the conclusion of a recent study conducted by researchers at the National
Heart, Lung and Blood Institute in Bethesda, Md.

Researchers investigated changes in aerobic capacity in healthy people across a
broad age group. They analyzed data on 375 women and 435 men between ages
21 and 87. Participants' aerobic capacity -- the amount of oxygen consumed
during exercise -- was monitored during treadmill tests. As an individual's aerobic
capacity diminishes, they commonly are less active, walk slower, and become
exhausted with physical exertion.

Researchers calculated the change in aerobic capacity for each decade of age.
They found aerobic capacity declines at a far greater rate in older age groups. The decline was between 3 percent and 6 percent per decade for those in their 20s
and 30s but more than 20 percent per decade in people ages 70 and older.

Beginning in the 40s, men's decline in aerobic capacity was found to be greater
than women's. To counter age-related declines, the researchers recommend
people maximize their aerobic capacity through exercise.
